About the Role

The Head – PR & CSR Manager role is a senior leadership position responsible for managing public relations activities and overseeing corporate social responsibility initiatives. At Airtel Africa, this position plays a key part in strengthening the company’s reputation and ensuring effective communication with stakeholders, the media, and the wider community.


Responsibilities

Job purpose

To developing corporate Communications strategies in conjunction with the PR agency to implement and execute CSR, PR and Corporate Communication activities that enhance Airtel's image as a good Corporate Citizen.
Respond to any negative publicity or perceptions against Airtel that come to light

Main responsibilities and duties

1. PR Strategy

  • Develop Public Relations strategy and actions plan
  • Develop a PR annual calendar for Airtel Malawi.
  • Implement the PR action plan as per agreed timing.
  • Guide initiatives/ideas that fit into the company's Corporate Social Responsibility objectives, develop programme, share with EC and get MD approval
  • Approve requests from the public that have a bearing on the CSR programme, and if appropriate, recommend to EC or management team.
  • Guide and Monitor the implementation of Airtel Corporate Social Responsibility programme 
  • Assess the impact of CSR activities and report to EC as appropriate
  • Guide to plan and manage events and functions and make arrangements for appropriate press coverage for these events.
  • Provide PR support to all departments within Airtel

 2. Corporate Communications Strategy

  • Build and maintain strong/positive relations with business partners and stakeholders
  • Identify key people in the various organs such as media houses, Government departments, 
  • Play a proactive role in the building and maintaining positive relationship with such partners though on-going interaction communications', ideas sharing, 
  • Initiate the set up of a CSR Advisory committee with MD’s approval
  • In liaison with MD and Company secretary , organize CSR Advisory committee quarterly meetings

3. Manage the PR agency and all media houses that do business with Airtel

  • Brief the agency on PR, CSR and internal communications matters that need to be executed.
  • Manage the local PR agency in respect to the quality of work, compliance with Airtel Group and local guidelines, timeliness and budgetary compliance.
  • Provide the local agency with input to support the preparation of speeches, talking points and press releases for Airtel
  • Continually check the quality of work done/services rendered by the agencies, provide feedback and manage under performance.


4. Act as a spokesperson for Airtel

  • Represent/speak on behalf of the company during company functions and events.
  • Monitor "Airtel's public image, highlight problems areas and recommend remedial actions as appropriate



  • Initiate the development of a Crisis Communication committee
  • Develop Crisis Communication guidelines


 Qualifications 

  • Strong Public Relations experience, communication and CSR activities
  • Mature with Proven ability to analyse issues and identify, design and implement effective practical recommendations
  • Fluency in English and local Malawian languages including Chichewa
